Rock is a naturally occurring solid mass of minerals. The solid outer layer of the Earth is made of rock. Generally rocks can be split into three different types; igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic. Rocks are classified depending on the chemical composition, the texture and by the process that formed them.
Igneous rocks are formed when molten magma is cooled. It is then divided into two main categories, plutonic rock and volcanic rock. Plutonic rock is created when magma cools and then crystallizes slowly within the Earth's crust. (Granite is an example of this). Volcanic rock is created when magma reaches the Earth's surface as lava. (Basalt is an example of this)
Sedimentary rocks are formed by deposited sediments, organic matter or chemical deposits, which then go through processes of compaction and cementation. For example, sand on a beach or mud on a river bed, becomes more and more compacted as more material is deposited on top. Eventually the sand or mud becomes so dense that it is essentially a rock.
Sedimentary rocks normally form near to the Earth's surface.

Metamorphic rocks are rocks which previously were an igneous, sedimentary rock or an older metamorphic rock. It becomes a metamorphic rock after it has been exposed to varying degrees of heat and pressure within the Earth's crust, different to those that formed the original rock form.
